What Is The Best Stand Up Paddle Board For Women?

Whenever I’m asked for women’s paddle board advice. I always say the same thing – “It’s pretty much the same as for guys except for a few key things”.

The key things are:

  • You want something lighter. These board can be heavy and I can’t tell you how many times my wife has struggled to carry the board.

  • You want something smaller. Guys are taller so they need the extra volume, but a smaller women can get so much more maneuverability because of her smaller size.

  • I’d recommend inflatable paddle boards and not epoxy boards. Inflatable boards again are lighter and smaller on average so it’s the same as the above advice.

Obviously these are broad generalizations and everyone is different, but it’s a good starting point. Let’s get into more detail.

How To Choose A Women’s Paddle Board Step-By-Step

When selecting a stand-up paddle board (SUP) for women, it’s essential to find one that aligns with your personal needs, preferences, and paddling goals. Here’s a few steps to help you navigate the choices.

1 – Identify Your Paddling Goals

What do you want to use your SUP for? Whether it’s leisurely paddles on a lake, doing long-distance tours, catching waves, racing, or perhaps using it for yoga or fitness, your intended use will dictate the type of board you should look for.

2 – Consider Size and Stability

The size of the board, including its length, width, and volume, plays a critical role in its stability and how it handles on the water. A general rule is that longer and wider boards tend to offer more stability. Which can be particularly helpful for beginners or those looking to use their board for yoga and fitness activities. However, the right size for you also depends on your weight and height.

3 – Think About Weight and Portability

If you plan on solo adventures, consider how easy it will be to carry your board from your car to the water. Inflatable boards are usually lighter and easier to transport, but even among hard boards, there are variations in weight that might influence your decision.

4 – Examine the Fin Setup:

The configuration of fins on your SUP affects its tracking (how straight it moves through the water) and maneuverability. A single fin setup is great for flat water and general use, while multiple fins can offer better control in surf conditions.

5 – Reflect on Personal Factors:

Your own skill level, as well as physical attributes like weight and height, should influence your choice. Beginners might opt for a wider, more stable board, while experienced paddlers could prefer something sleeker for speed and agility.

By keeping these in mind and focusing on what feels right for your lifestyle and paddling ambitions, you’ll be well on your way to choosing a SUP that you love.

Women’s Paddle Board: Best Sizes For Each Skill Level

As you get better at stand-up paddleboarding, you might start eyeing boards that are a bit different from the beginner-friendly ones you started with. Advanced paddlers often go for boards that are longer or narrower, depending on what they’re into. And for those really getting into the thick of things, like SUP surfing or racing, hard boards become the go-to. They’re a bit trickier to handle if you’re just starting out but offer that extra edge in performance for the pros.

As you grow more comfortable and skilled, don’t hesitate to mix things up and try new things with your board. Whether it’s trying your hand at SUP yoga, fishing from your board, or setting off on longer tours, there’s a whole world of activities to explore that can deepen your love for the sport and make every paddle out an adventure.

But let’s talk about the ideal set up based on skill levels.

I find that the best setup for a beginner women’s paddle board is:

Size:

  • 10′ to 11’8″ in size.
  • 31″ to 35″ in width

Volume:

The ideal volume for a beginner women’s paddle board is crucial because it affects the board’s stability and buoyancy, directly influencing how easy it is to balance and paddle.

For most beginner women, a good starting point is to look for a paddle board with a volume that’s roughly equal to your weight in kilograms multiplied by 2 to 2.5. This formula ensures that the board has enough buoyancy to keep you afloat comfortably while providing a stable platform to learn on.

For example, if you weigh 70 kg (about 154 lbs), you should aim for a board with a volume of approximately 140 to 175 liters. This range provides a good balance between stability and maneuverability, making it easier to learn the basics of paddle boarding.
